How Much Screen Time Should Kids Earn Per Chore?

Quick answerMost families do best paying for the whole daily list rather than per chore: finish two to four daily tasks, earn a fixed block like 60 to 120 minutes. Add small bonus tasks worth 15 to 30 minutes each, and set a daily maximum so the total stays within your family's limit.

Why pay for the list, not each chore

Per-chore pricing turns every task into a negotiation ("is unloading the dishwasher worth 20 or 30 minutes?"). A daily list with one reward is simpler: the list is the job, screens are the pay.

A starting exchange rate

ItemSuggested reward
Daily list (2 to 4 tasks)60 to 120 minutes
Bonus quest, small15 minutes
Bonus quest, big (car, yard)30 to 60 minutes
7-day streakA small extra block

Set a daily ceiling

Bonus tasks should never push total time past what you're comfortable with. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends families make a family media plan with consistent limits for school-age kids rather than a single magic number. Pick a ceiling that fits your family and stick to it.

Adjust after two weeks

If your kid finishes in ten minutes and the list feels too easy, add one task rather than cutting time. If they're giving up, the list is too long or the reward too small.

Common questions

Is 2 hours of earned screen time too much?

It depends on age and what the time is used for. Many families start around 1 to 2 hours on school days and adjust from there.

Should weekends earn more?

Some families allow a higher ceiling on weekends. The important part is deciding in advance, not on Saturday morning.
