Apple Screen Time vs. Earned Screen Time: Which Works Better for Kids?

Quick answerApple Screen Time sets time limits and schedules, which is great for capping use. Earned screen time ties access to finishing tasks, which handles the "chores first" problem limits can't. They work well together: Apple's system does the enforcing, and an earned screen time app decides when to unlock.

What Apple Screen Time does well

  • Daily App Limits by app or category
  • Downtime schedules (for example, bedtime)
  • Content and privacy restrictions
  • Ask to Buy for purchases

Where it falls short for chores

Screen Time doesn't know about chores or homework. It can give your kid two hours a day, but it can't wait until the dishes are done. If you want "chores first," you're back to unlocking things by hand, or entering your passcode on their device.

Using both

Keep Apple's Downtime for bedtime and content restrictions for age ratings. Let an earned screen time app handle the daytime "chores first" rule. One heads up: Apple's own App Limits still apply on top, so if an app seems locked when it shouldn't be, check for an older App Limit in Screen Time settings.

Do it with Peep

How to use Peep for this

Peep is built on Apple's Screen Time, so the lock is Apple's. Peep decides when it opens: after every daily mission is done and you approve it.

  1. Install Peep on your iPhoneDownload Peep, create your family, and add each kid. You'll get a nest code for every kid.
  2. Set the daily missionsPick the chores and tasks that have to happen each day, and how much screen time they earn (up to 4 hours a day).
  3. Connect your kid's deviceInstall Peep on your kid's iPhone or iPad, enter the nest code, and choose the apps to lock. Peep checks that the lock is really working before setup finishes.
  4. Approve with one tapYour kid checks off missions. You get a notification and approve from your own phone. Their apps unlock automatically.

Common questions

Is Apple Screen Time enough on its own?

For capping total use, often yes. For making screens wait until chores or homework are done, you need something that unlocks based on tasks.

Will Peep conflict with my Screen Time settings?

They can stack. If an app stays locked after approval, look for an Apple App Limit or Downtime rule on that app.
